Turmeric

Turmeric

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a herbaceous plant from Asia. In this country, it is also known as yellow ginger, saffron root, or yellow root—and for good reason: anyone who has ever spilled the yellow powder from its root on an absorbent surface will know how difficult it is to remove. In this country, turmeric is therefore used in many dishes as a coloring agent and as a substitute for saffron. In oriental markets, vacationers should be careful that they are not sold the much cheaper turmeric instead of real (extremely expensive!) saffron. In India, turmeric has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine for its cleansing and energizing properties, for example to treat wounds and rashes. In Indonesia, turmeric is traditionally used to strengthen the immune system and combat respiratory diseases. The “magic root” also has great potential in the fight against the most important diseases of our time: Alzheimer's and cancer. Experiments have already proven its cancer cell-inhibiting effect, and a patient study on colon polyp patients even demonstrated an inhibiting and repressing effect. The reason for the beneficial effects of the turmeric rhizome, which NOBUSAN also relies on in its products, is its high curcumin content, the pigment that makes up a full three percent of the root and whose positive effects on digestion are already well documented. Because curcumin stimulates bile acid production in the liver, the pigment is particularly effective against bloating and flatulence.

Centaurium

Centaurium

Centaurium is a medicinal herb surrounded by many legends. In earlier times, it was believed to bring health and great wealth and also to protect against lightning strikes. The heat-loving plant is found throughout Europe, but today, with its 20 species, it is mainly found in the Mediterranean region. In Germany, centaury is a protected species and was named medicinal plant of the year in 2004. Celandine is related to gentian and is characterized by many bitter compounds, which stimulate the digestive juices and therefore make it ideal for treating gallbladder, liver, stomach, and intestinal complaints (caution is advised in cases of stomach or duodenal ulcers). Overall, centaury has a stimulating and strengthening effect on the entire organism, as well as anti-inflammatory and blood-purifying properties. Medieval healers valued it for wound healing. Since the herb is not particularly palatable, NOBUSAN Nutrition uses it in concentrated powder form.

Wormwood

Wormwood

We talk about a “downside” when something nice also has a bitter side. The expression derives from the bitter taste of wormwood (Artemisia absinthium). The bitter mugwort, as the plant is also called, is so extremely bitter that it is almost impossible to consume it in its pure form. Wormwood was already valued as a medicinal herb in ancient times. The wild plant, which belongs to the Asteraceae family, grows mainly in temperate zones of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Its bitter compounds stimulate certain digestive hormones and bile functions, which is why it is traditionally used to treat loss of appetite, digestive problems, gastritis, bloating, and flatulence, for example. Wormwood is also known as an ingredient in absinthe, a spirit that was considered a cult drink in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1915, absinthe was banned in many parts of Europe and the US because it was believed that its high thujone content could be harmful to health. However, this could not be scientifically proven, provided that absinthe is not consumed in excess. The green drink has been permitted again in almost all European countries since 1998 and in Switzerland since 2005. Nevertheless, it is advisable to use ready-made preparations containing wormwood, such as AMDORON from NOBUSAN. This makes it easier to estimate the thujone dose and safely avoid overdose.

CAUTION: Wormwood must not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding! People with an allergy to composite flowers should also avoid this herb.

Artichokes

Artichokes

We mostly know artichokes (Cynara scolymus) as tasty antipasti or as the main ingredient in the popular schnapps Cynar. But this pretty thistle plant from the Mediterranean region can do much more: it can stimulate digestion, protect the liver and gallbladder, and lower cholesterol levels. Artichoke preparations are particularly beneficial after fatty meals, as flavonoids and bitter compounds such as cynaropicrin stimulate the secretion of stomach acid, thereby promoting the breakdown and removal of fats. This prevents bloating and flatulence—and improved fat digestion can actually lower cholesterol levels over time. NOBUSAN therefore uses high-dose artichoke extract primarily to support the liver, gallbladder, stomach, and intestines.

Sage

Sage

Common sage or medicinal sage (Salvia officinalis) is a classic remedy used in monastic medicine; as early as the 9th century, this Mediterranean plant was found in the herb gardens of Central European Benedictine monks and is therefore a natural addition to the NOBUSAN product range. Sage belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Its slightly lanceolate to oval leaves are silvery, hairy, and very aromatic. In naturopathy, sage is a proven remedy for sore throats thanks to its anti-inflammatory essential oils. In addition to thujone and linalool, these essential oils also contain tannins and bitter compounds. Sage also contains flavonoids, including rosemary and caffeic acid. Sage is also valued for its heat-regulating and antiperspirant effects. Its pleasantly cooling effect is not only beneficial during menopause; on hot summer days, a cup of lukewarm sage tea is good for everyone! Sage extracts are used in cosmetics for their astringent and anti-inflammatory effects to treat blemished skin, and even in ancient times, sage tea was valued as a tonic for the uterus. However, pregnant women and especially breastfeeding women should not drink too much of it because of the thujone it contains. If a woman wants to stop breastfeeding, however, drinking several cups of sage tea a day is recommended – it quickly stops the flow of milk. Sage leaves are used as incense to purify the air in rooms; during the plague epidemics, people relied on its disinfecting power. Medieval healers also used it to treat fever, urinary tract disorders, and toothache.

Wegwarte

Wegwarte

Silver Willow

Silver Willow

Silver willow, basket willow, weeping willow, and many more—there are 450 different species of this enchanting deciduous tree with its often delicate and sometimes hanging branches. They are mainly found on the banks of rivers and lakes, as willows like moist conditions. The proverbial wicker basket immediately springs to mind when you think of flexible willow rods. However, it is primarily the bark of the white willow (Salix alba) that has been used for medicinal purposes since the Middle Ages. It contains a fever-reducing and pain-relieving substance called salicin. Chemically processed into acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), it is now a component of many painkillers. Hildegard von Bingen used the bark to make teas to treat fever, gout, and rheumatism. White willow extract also contains tannins, phenol glycosides, and flavonoids. It is primarily the interaction with the flavonoids that ensures that the pain-relieving effect is stronger than the salicin content would suggest. This is proof that natural substances have unbeatable synergistic effects, which NOBUSAN also makes use of, whether it's for anti-inflammatory properties or to combat unwanted aging processes.

Spleenwort (Polypodium vulgare)

Spleenwort (Polypodium vulgare)

The undersides of the leaves of the common spleenwort (Polypodium vulgare) feature characteristic sori – speckled structures that contain spores. This is where the spleenwort gets its name. Due to its long roots, which taste sweet because of their high sugar content, the fern has also been given the common name angelica. This perennial plant grows up to 50 centimeters tall and thrives in semi-shaded areas. It is found in Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America. Due to their mucus- and expectorant-promoting effects, the rhizomes of the common polypody can be helpful for coughs, hoarseness, and chronic bronchitis. They are also used to treat gout, liver, gallbladder, and stomach complaints, as well as worms. This type of fern also contains ecdysteroids—natural anabolic steroids that support muscle growth. Spotted fern has a mild laxative and stomach-calming effect and is also an ingredient in the NOBUSAN special preparation AMDORON.

CAUTION: Spotted fern is easily confused with the poisonous worm fern.

Ginger

Ginger

Like turmeric, ginger (Zingiber officinalis) belongs to the ginger family. It thrives in tropical and subtropical climates and has been known in German-speaking countries for just over 1,000 years. Ginger root is mainly used in Asian cuisine, where it often serves two purposes: to spice up dishes and to relieve digestive problems. India, China, and Nigeria are world-renowned producers of ginger. The fiery root contains mainly gingerol, essential oils, acids, resins, borneol and cineol, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, sodium, and phosphorus. Together, these are said to stimulate digestion and appetite and strengthen the stomach and immune system. In Asia, the roots are also used as a remedy for coughs – no wonder, since ginger root has antibacterial and antiviral properties in any form of preparation, promotes blood circulation, supports bile production, increases intestinal movement, relieves nausea and vomiting (including travel sickness!), and strengthens the heart. Ginger also inhibits blood clotting and is said to slow down the release of pro-inflammatory substances in the body in rheumatic diseases. In studies on osteoarthritis symptoms, pain relief comparable to ibuprofen was achieved. NOBUSAN therefore uses ginger in its STIMUCAL product out of conviction.

As a result, AMDORON helps alleviate digestive stress by gently cleansing the system and counteracting such symptoms as irregularity, heartburn and lack of appetite, as well as feelings of nausea or bloating after meals. The unique combination of natural plant extracts is designed to provide lasting relief from common digestive problems, while encapsulated probiotic cultures help maintain overall gastrointestinal health.
